When I was much younger than I already am, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai was a big deal. I was in school, somewhere around grade-5 or 6. My cousin was a big fan of Rani Mukherjee. I knew the words to "Hai hai re hai". The hair band that kajol used, to fasten her hair was a rage!
There used to be a phase where rain-songs were a must-have in movies. Now, its the "pub scene/ discotheque" song. Has the zeitgeist of the consumer changed, or has the audience shifted towards a really young crowd, that has enough money to throw at senseless inane cinema and more?
Who is the audience of Indian cinema? College-going multiplex-ers is my answer. What has cinema got to offer to my mother? Not even the same sensibilities, I am sure. I fear that when I am slightly older (like gracefully 60), there wont be anything on screen that I relate to - except maybe the purple hats and bright colors (You see, purple hats feature in my life.)
I do not relate to Bollywood cinema, as it is currently. I do not "understand" it. At no point, in any recent movie, have I nodded to say "Oh so true!". I refuse to believe that the Indian youth (the ha-ha-hee-hee people)are a bunch of clueless lads and lasses. No sir, we ha-ha-hee-hee, but we got clues. If not a clue, a great hunch maybe. But I doubt we are the empty headed bozos going "I don't know about the future. And couldn't care less about anything that's not pub hopping". I don't know HOW that's a great theme to use in a movie! Id be shocked if people tell me they "connected" to it.
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai Rahul, tum nahi samjoge! And guess what, Rahul will surely agree.
